Maritime Super Series, Launching May 2023

HALIFAX, NS / CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI / FREDERICTON, NB - May 3, 2023

As a collective, Suburban FC (NS), Winsloe Charlottetown FC (PEI) & the Fredericton Reds (NB) are excited to announce the inaugural Maritime Super Series for the 2023 Season.

It is no secret that in the last few years, the beautiful game has seen tremendous growth in this Country. From the hosting of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Introduction of the top division 'Canadian Premier League, to our Men’s National Team qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the strides that this game has made have created a cultural transformation. Canada is a football (soccer) country. As the game continues to grow here in our region, so does the need for more pathways and opportunities for our talent, as well as the need to bridge the gap between the divisions and leagues within Canada & North America.

The Maritime Super Series (MSS) will kick off in May of 2023 and will showcase 3 teams from the Maritime region. These teams will be composed of the best players from the region with the mission of showcasing and giving opportunities to be these talents. The MSS will prove that the Maritimes & Atlantic Canada can support a semi-professional model. This model is seen all throughout Canada with the status of League1, but the Atlantic provinces have yet to get a taste.

The three inaugural season teams will be made with one representative from each of the three Maritime provinces, with the hope to lay the foundation for the potential introduction of League 1 Atlantic in 2024. The three teams will be Suburban Football Club, representing Nova Scotia, Fredericton Reds, representing New Brunswick & Winsloe Charlottetown FC, representing Prince Edward Island. The three Provincial Sporting Organizations (PSOs) in Soccer NS, Soccer NB & PEI Soccer have backed and supported the Super Series.

Over the last several months, representatives & the founders of the Maritime Super Series have had open dialogue and discussions with League1 Canada’s President, Dino Rossi. Mr Rossi has been extremely supportive of this initiative. League1 Canada has made it very clear that they have the mission to take L1 from coast to coast, and the interest from Maritimes & Atlantic to establish the next League1 competition is compelling.

Here’s what Dino Rossi, League1 Canada President, had to comment;

“We are excited by the news of the inaugural Maritime Super Series, and will certainly be keeping an eye on these exhibition games”

“After enjoying a productive visit at the end of March, positive conversations about League1 Atlantic have continued throughout April. The response has been great, and establishing a tournament like this that showcases local talent is fantastic. Credit is due to everyone involved in making this happen, and we wish the teams every success this year.”

The inaugural season will see 3 weekends of games followed by a Finals weekend in August. The dates are as follows; May 26-28 (Halifax, NS), June 16-18 (Fredericton, NB) & July 14-16 (Charlottetown, PEI). The full match fixtures can be found here - MSS Schedule.
